Design and Technology Policy

 

Aims and objectives


Design and technology prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. The subject encourages children to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. Design and technology helps all children to become discriminating and informed consumers and potential innovators.


Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

 

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world;
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users;
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others;
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.


Teaching and learning


There are four aspects to teaching Design and Technology which are:


Design - Children design purposeful, functional and appealing products based on a design criteria. They generate, develop model and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, using templates and mock- ups. Older pupils aim their products at particular individuals or groups and may use computers in this process.
Make – Children select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks. They select from and use a wide range of materials and components.
Evaluate – Children explore and evaluate a range of existing products. They evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria. Older pupils how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world.
Technical Knowledge – Children build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable. They also explore and use mechanisms in their products. Older pupils include electrical systems in their products.


Cooking and nutrition


There is a dedicated Food Technology room in school with height-adjustable tables to meet the needs of children of all ages. We teach pupils to:

 

  • prepare dishes using the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet;
  • understand where food comes from;
  • in KS2, understand seasonality and know where and how a variety of ingredients are produced and processed.

 

Assessment and recording


Pupils are broadly assessed against the programme of study in the National Curriculum. These assessments indicate whether the child is in line with, above or below national expectations.


Health and safety


The general teaching requirement for health and safety applies in this subject. We teach children how to follow proper procedures for food safety and hygiene. All staff take responsibility for safe working, handling and storage of tools and equipment. All staff ensure that adequate supervision is given when children are engaged in design and technology activities.
