Geography Policy

 

Purpose of Study


In Geography we encourage every child to experience the world beyond the classroom. 
This includes the study of the human and physical processes which shape the Earth, and the interaction between them. Children are taught to recognise the diversity of people, places, resources and the environment of the world in which they live, and enable them to make sense of their surroundings and the wider world.

 

Aims

 

At St Paul’s CE Primary School we aim to ensure that all pupils:

 

  • develop critical thinking skills about their environment;
  • are encouraged to develop their interest to enquire about the world in a wider context;
  • foster a sense of understanding and sensitivity for the world in which we live;
  • understand the relationship between the key physical and human geographical features.

 

Skills


These learning opportunities are part of the current National Curriculum guidelines set out for Geography and are implemented throughout the school’s year groups.

 

Children are given the opportunity to:

 

  • develop an understanding of the features and conditions which make up the physical environment;
  • learn how people have used that environment, considering both positive and negative effects.

 

Children develop these skills by:

 

  • observing and comparing places and geographical features;
  • collecting and analysing data;
  • measuring and recording accurately;
  • communicating information in a variety of ways, including writing at length;
  • enquiring and asking questions, and proposing solutions to human and physical problems;
  • interpreting and using a range of geographical information including maps, atlases, digital mapping and globes;
  • using secondary sources (photographs, books, films);
  • making use of computers for assisting in the research and presentation of findings;
  • understanding how places fit into a wider geographical context.

 

Curriculum

 

St Paul’s follows the Programme of Study for geography as it is set out in the National Curriculum which covers four main headings:

 

  • Locational knowledge
  • Place knowledge
  • Human and physical geography
  • Geographical skills and fieldwork

 

Each Key Stage uses a thematic approach taken from the National Curriculum’s ‘Programme of Study’, which is set out in two cycles. A two-year cycle of topics has been drawn up by staff and is carefully balanced to ensure consolidation and extension of skills.

 

In Reception class, teaching and learning of geography is implemented through the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, in particular, ‘Understanding of the World’, where children are given the opportunity to enquire, develop and understand the appropriate skills necessary for geography by exploring ‘People and Communities’, ‘The World’ and ‘Technology’.

 

Progression


Children build on basic skills and themes and use them in different contexts to reinforce and consolidate previous experiences. We ensure careful progression from KS1 to KS2. The Geography co-ordinator keeps samples of the children’s work in a portfolio in order to demonstrate the expected level of achievement for each age group.


Assessment 


Assessment for learning is part of the normal planning, teaching and learning cycle. The learning outcomes in each topic show how children can demonstrate what they have learnt. The work the children do themselves will serve as a record for classes working in each topic of geography. In St Paul’s school, assessments in geography are completed termly and are based on the topics set out in the two-year cycle. In this way, teachers and the geography co-ordinator can evaluate the standards and achievements in geography against the end of key stage level descriptions, set out in the National Curriculum.
