The National Curriculum in England (September 2013) states the purpose of music:
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
At St Paul’s CE Primary School we also aim to ensure that all pupils:
Children at St Paul’s follow the relevant Key Stage subject content through discrete music lessons, through composing, performing and listening to music that is related to topics, and through use of the on-line music resource ‘Charanga’. Children of different abilities are able to participate together and those who play musical instruments are encouraged to use them as part of class music.
There is a music room which is well resourced with tuned and untuned percussion, electric keyboards, other instruments and a range of songbooks and resources to support instrumental lessons.
Singing is important at St Paul’s and we learn a range of songs, including hymn ‘classics’, which enable children to take part in important events throughout their life, such as weddings.
Children have the opportunity to learn instruments from visiting teachers. The purchase or hire of an instrument and the payment for tuition is the responsibility of parents. There may be support for those who are in receipt of benefits.
We offer a range of musical events according to staff availability, including choir, orchestra, instrumental ensembles and participation in KS1 and KS2 productions. These usually happen at the end of the academic year.
